Self Care

I have learned that taking care of oneself is not a selfish act. It is a necessity. To work effectively and to maintain good health, here are some simple tips:

  • Drink water upon waking up each day and throughout the day. Spice things up with natural flavors by adding slices of fresh lemon, lime, cucumber or strawberry. I use a glass pitcher with a metal lid that acts as a strainer. It simplifies the process; I add water as needed to the fruit. I replace the fruit in 1-2 days. I keep the pitcher chilled in the refrigerator.
  • Sleep 7-9 hours each night. I maintain this ritual because when I have slept less, I have regretted it by being tired, less productive and yes… even irritable.
  • Eat small meals throughout the day. I start the day with a home-made smoothie, sushi or an organic egg burrito. Nuts and gluten-free protein bars are great snacks. I have learned that limiting sugar and gluten, is best for me. Salads with vegetables and various protein are great meals, too.
  • Make time to get organized and set a to do list for the day. I accomplish my goals because I write them down in the early morning (or the night before). I refer to them throughout the day. At the end of the day, I happily discard my post it note knowing that I achieved the essential to do’s.
  • Aromatherapy: I have been using lavender oil in a diffuser in my classroom for the past five months. It has had a calming effect on myself and on my students. I also use natural room sprays to enhance the scent of the room. At home in my zen office, I light a candle to relax.
  • Breathe. Breathing in cool air through the nose, and breathing out warm air through the mouth is both calming and energizing. I start my day off with a meditation. I meditate throughout the day and before bedtime. I recommend finding instrumental music that is soothing to you. Guided meditations are also very effective. Try the free app, Insight Timer.
